memoryscan is one of three dances of a shadow of forgotten ancestors depicts individuals who accept, embrace and celebrate their cultural background. This new work will involve video works by OVNI, a video artists group and Caspar Stracke, music composition by Koosil-ja Hwang, as choreographer. The complete version of this work will be premiered in March of 1999 at the Kitchen, New York City.

a shadow of forgotten ancestors is the second piece in a dance cycle dealing with studies of ethnicity and individual culture. Ms. Hwang's new piece deals with the question of how ethnicity and culture determines an individual's identity. The final version of this work will depict how individuals locate their ancestors within themselves and manifest this process through dances portraying each dancer's personality. The complexities of the multi-layered cultures that converge in this project will create an alternative way of expressing that lifts the boundaries of culture, generations, and gender and celebrates the individual "as is."

The first part of the dance "Untitled" was presented by The Central Park Summerstage in July 1997.
