The effects of one culture's dominance over another and the suppression of the individual identity
are ingeniusly abstracted in Ceases, still I see, through the use of song, dance and visual elements.
Through images and dances that range from the portrayal of a militaristic state, with angular,
explosive movements to the simplicity of a woman singing passionately as she slowly scoots
across the floor, a culture of inequities emerges. A driving musical score enlivens the display of a
blind, communal power dominating individual freedom and expression. The poetic, passionate
sound of a singular female voice resonates when later, that voice is lost. The abuse of the voice and
the body become symbols for the suppresion of the "culture of the self."
